However, Shilajit also benefits older adults and may support various health needs as they age.

With the growing popularity of natural health supplements, Shilajit has become widely used among adults.

Is Shilajit safe for old people? Can older people take Shilajit?

Let’s dive deeper into these questions.

About Shilajit

Shilajit is a rare mineral-rich substance mainly from the high Himalayan mountains in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan. Small deposits have also been found in the Caucasus Mountains in Russia and parts of Central Asia. The Central State Geographical Exploration Center notes that these deposits are limited and rare.

For over 4,000 years, Shilajit has been valued in natural medicine, especially in Ayurveda, Chinese, and Tibetan traditions, for its unique properties. The resin form is considered the purest and most effective, though it’s also available as a dry extract and in supplement form.

In ancient Indian texts like Rasasastra, Shilajit is called by names like Silajatu, Silajita, and Adrija. It belongs to the "Maharasa" group of powerful mineral substances. The name combines "Sila" (rock or mountain) and "Jatu" (resin), referring to how it flows from Himalayan rocks during the summer.

Main Components of Shilajit

The primary and active component of Pahadi Shilajit is fulvic acid which is considered the strongest natural electrolyte. Fulvic acid is an unusual collection of hormones, nutrients, antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids, superoxide dismutases, free radical scavengers, bactericidal substances, antiviral, antifungal, biochemical, and phytochemicals.

Also, the rare Pahadi Shilajit variant is notable for its content of humic acid, with a concentration of 80 g/100g, and traces of gold, measured at 0.5 mg/kg.

It also comprises Minerals 38.65% organic substances 36.2 %, water 9.5 %, nitrogenous substances 1.3%, lime 7.8 %, and mica 1.35 %. It has a pungent odor like cow’s urine.

Pahadi Shilajit Extraction

During the hot summer seasons (April and May) the temperature in the mountains of the Himalayan range rises. As a result, the thick essence from the surface of these rocks oozes out.

It dries up and collects in between these rocks. This blackish rock essence is called Shilajit. Or, the essence of Himalayan mountain rocks is secreted out because of the fierce sun, dries up, and collects in between the rock cleavages like that of black coal.

Shilajit is then collected from the higher range of the Himalayas in solid rock form which is impure. It is then purified.

Shilajit’s Benefits For Older Adults

Packed with minerals, antioxidants, and fulvic acid, Shilajit supports your well-being in various ways.

Here are five key benefits of Shilajit for older adults:

Prevent from Alzheimer's

Research suggests that Shilajit may help prevent or slow the progression of cognitive decline in older adults, potentially reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. While Alzheimer’s generally affects older adults, adding Shilajit to a wellness routine may support long-term brain health.

The primary component in Shilajit, fulvic acid, is an antioxidant known to support cognitive health by preventing the buildup of tau proteins, which are linked to memory loss and cognitive decline.

Studies indicate that the fulvic acid in Shilajit may help stop the abnormal buildup of tau proteins and reduce inflammation, supporting cognitive function and offering valuable brain health benefits for older adults.

Control of iron deficiency

Older adults who struggle with iron absorption or have low iron levels may benefit from Shilajit, as it can support healthy iron levels in the body. Iron deficiency anemia is common in older adults, and Shilajit may help improve iron levels gradually over time.

Research shows that Shilajit may help increase hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell count, which are essential for healthy blood function. By supporting these components, Shilajit may help older adults maintain proper iron levels and manage iron deficiency anemia.

Reduce the risk of heart attacks

With dietary challenges and lifestyle factors affecting cardiovascular health in older adults, Shilajit may help reduce the risk of heart issues.

Research suggests that Shilajit supports cardiac performance and may help lower the risk of heart-related conditions by promoting overall heart health. For older adults, this can contribute to improved cardiovascular strength and resilience, supporting a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Fight chronic fatigue syndrome

As people age, they may experience increasing levels of tiredness or fatigue. However, if this fatigue is extreme, persistent, and unrelieved by rest, it could be a symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

The complex disorder is characterized by overwhelming fatigue that can’t be explained by underlying medical conditions and is often accompanied by other symptoms, such as muscle pain, memory issues, and difficulty with concentration.

Researchers in 2012 found that shilajit may reduce the effects of CFS and help to prevent mitochondrial dysfunction.

Enhance Bone Strength and Mineral Density

Shilajit may help support bone health and density in older adults, which is important for maintaining mobility and preventing fractures. As people age, bones require ample minerals to stay strong, and Shilajit provides a natural source of these nutrients.

It can be especially beneficial for older adults with active lifestyles or those aiming to prevent bone loss. Stronger bones help reduce the risk of fractures and support overall physical health.

Now that you know the benefits, let’s go through the insights about Shilajit dosage for old age people.
